The
old Alameda Theater at 318 West Houston Street, a gloriously extravagant
example of Art Deco/Latin/Moderne architecture, is currently being
meticulously renovated. When completed, the theater will be at the
center of Arte en La Zona Cultural, a developing Latino cultural arts
district. The theatre will also serve as headquarters for The Alameda,
the non-profit arts organization which is the catalyst for these new
developments.
In affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, The Alameda will
also be opening a regional history and culture museum in the Centro
de Artes building in Market Square.
Museo American
will be the first Smithsonian Affiliate in the US, and will honor
the richness of the Latino contribution to American culture.
